Building Constructions
Evaluations of buildings constructions are performed to determine degrees of sound
and impact isolation and speech privacy. Acoustical goals for building designs may
be contained in state and local building codes, federal and local housing guidelines, and
construction standards specific to a project. The criteria may specify certain minimum
degrees of acoustical performance in terms of Sound Transmission Class, Impact Isolation
Class, the received levels of noise transmitted from adjacent spaces, and other descriptors.
Building construction acoustical design services include:
- Reviews of architectural and structural design plans for existing and planned spaces
- Surveys of sound and impact isolation between existing interior spaces following
ASTM, ISO, ANSI, and other standard test methods
- Surveys of sound isolation from exterior sources following similar types of standards
- Reviews of published acoustical test reports supplied by laboratories, product manufacturers,
and construction organizations, acoustical criteria contained in applicable building
codes, and other construction design references
- Development of computerized models to evaluate the sound and impact isolation of
existing and proposed interior wall and floor constructions, and to evaluate construction
design options to increase the sound and impact isolation
- Development of models to evaluate the sound isolation of existing and proposed exterior
wall and roof constructions and exterior door and window assemblies, and to evaluate
improved design options
- Follow-up surveys of sound and impact isolation after improvements have been implemented
and after facilities are constructed.
